SEATTLE – April 14, 2010 – Nearly six months after the fire that threatened to destroy Taproot Theatre Company’s Greenwood playhouse, the theatre is celebrating a remarkable time in its history. On Saturday, April 10, at its annual fundraising gala, Taproot Theatre reflected on “The Year of the Asterisk,” a year marked with unexpected calamity but also immense support from countless patrons, arts organizations, foundations, and other individuals and businesses. Through that support, Taproot’s staff and board persevered during a challenging time, and became stronger than ever. Bringing in a net of over $105,000 at the gala, Taproot Theatre surpassed its goal by about $25,000, and is excited about the number of new donors.
“This is certainly an incredible time for Taproot as we set our sights on 2011—our 35th anniversary season—and beyond,” said Scott Nolte, Taproot’s producing artistic director. “Despite the challenges of the economy and the trials we faced after the fire, this really shows how much Taproot Theatre means to its patrons and supporters. It’s amazing to see all these people who really stand behind what we do, from the artistry on the Mainstage to the programs for children.”
In addition to highlighting Taproot Theatre’s Mainstage, Touring and Acting Studio programs, Taproot Theatre gave the audience a sneak peek of what’s next for the adjacent property, where the Eleanor Roosevelt Building (ERB) stood until the October 23 fire. Initially purchasing the property in 2000 for a future expansion, Taproot Theatre is working on a solution that fits in with its long-term goals and also provides a timely solution to the hole in the middle of the Greenwood business district. An announcement will be made soon.
